I am a massive fan of concept art! I love seeing all of the different ideas that the production team dreamed up and thought of. I love seeing how ideas morph over time. I also love seeing what could have been.
Over the last several years I have been fortunate enough to be in contact with several artists that brought the different Ghostbusters films to life. One of my favorite artists and one that I have gotten to know a little bit is Henry/Hank Mayo. Hank did a tremendous amount of work on Ghostbusters 2. One of my favorites is his work that explores all of the emotions and expressions of Slimer! All of the art in the 1989 Ghostbusters 2 Topps card set and most of the art that you see used for promotional purposes was done by Mayo. It's classic in my opinion!
One of the fun facts I have learned throughout our conversations is that Hank actually submitted some conceptual designs and ideas for 2016's Ghostbusters: Answer The Call. Unfortunately, none of his concept art was used and that means it has mainly remained hidden all of this time. However, I am excited to share them with you over the next few weeks! So, stay tuned!
Today, I'll kick it off with Murderous Margaret! I believe that this was the original plan for Gertrude Aldridge. Director Paul Feig said that Gertrude was originally going to be a sort of ugly old woman. I love the ghoulish version of Margaret here. It gives me some serious Librarian Ghost vibes!
I have seen this art around the interwebs, but I promise that you haven't seen the next two that I will share! ;)
